1st Place Winner – NOTHING BUT A DREAM – Online Juried Exhibition: Spring 2015
ArtSceneToday.com
Juror Kay Kenny: “The difficulty in judging any online selection becomes so much more so when viewing images that include surface and scale as part of their make-up. I found myself trying to image the works in person. With so many excellent images I was hard-pressed to make choices. The artist statements really helped. Understanding what material that were used and the size made it easier to visualize the actual work. Most work spoke to the theme as I understood it. The hardest decision was the top place winners. Ultimately, I chose the painting “New Yolk” as first choice for it’s subtle use of pattern, the reference to old master painting, surrealism and the funny metaphor of red white and blue in connection to the title. I enjoyed reviewing all the works submitted and I am thankful to the artists for taking the time to bring their work to my attention.”

499 Van Brunt Street, Red Hook, Brooklyn, NY

The Brooklyn Waterfront Artist Coalition’s Fourth Wide Open Art show was curated by The Whitney Museum of American Art’s Senior Curatorial Assistant, Carrie Springer, who picked 100 works out of over 1700 submissions. The broad theme of “Wide Open 4” encompasses all the possibilities of knowledge and freedom and love – wide open spaces…arms wide open…eyes wide open – but as with all things, there is the inevitable opposite – wide open to attack…corruption…failure. What kind of fantasy is this? What does it really indicate? This juried show looked to explore this idea of “wide open” in all the hidden niches of our collective psyche.
